Twisted Rhythm are UK production duo Martin Murphy and Stewart Milne. With releases and remixes accross an array of labels including Refunkt, Reelhouse and MOD to name but a few these guys are on the up. Dean caught up with them recently and managed to find out a little about the guys and the music that inspired them.

Where are you from originally?
Stewart: We're both from Cambridge
When Did You Start DJing?
Martin: I was eighteen but Stewart beat me to it; he was fifteen.
Do you have any other jobs?
Stewart: I work in Aviation, I guess you could say I'm a bit of a jet-setter...Martin: I'm in I.T. working in London.
Do you have a favourite venue?
Stewart: The Purple Onion (Middlesborough)Martin: Yeah, The Purple Onion is great, Ministry has also long been a favourite of mine.
Tell us about the best gig you've ever played
Stewart: It has to be a gig in Russia watching 1000 people going mad to good quality house music was unreal!Martin: I played at the Ministry around 5 years ago before Twisted Rhythm was formed, everyone was into the music, it went off!!
Any embarrassing moments?
Stewart: A DJ classic taking the needle off the wrong record!!
Martin: Not realizing the filter was on bringing in a tune. The CD went out a bit, then a lot before I realized the filter was open and closed it – one to forget.
Name a few tunes currently doing the damage for you?
Stewart: ummmm it has to be Justin Michael's  "Sky" (Danism Remix), Steve Angello - "Gypsy" (Laidback Luke Mix), Eddie Amador - "Release Yourself" (2008 Mix), Mark Knight  - "Arena" and Roy Maclaren's "Release Yourself" on Nocturnal Records
Name a few of your all time favourites
Stewart: It's hard to pick out a few but here goes, "Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy, Barbara Tucker - "Beautiful People" and "Promised Land" by Joe Smooth stick out.Martin: I'm with Stewart, it's really tough to narrow it down but I could pick out a few Masters At Work productions that really hit the spot. I'm thinking "To Be In Love", "The Bounce" & Black Masses' "Wonderful Person".
What do you listen to when you're not DJing or producing?
Stewart: I’ll listen to anything if it sounds good!
Martin: I listen to all different genres – you never know where that next idea might come from.
What do you use? Vinyl, CD or MP3?
Martin: I use both CD and MP3 but Stewart tends to stick with CD. I haven't used vinyl for nearly three years despite havin thousands of records.
Your thoughts on the digital revolution?
Stewart: I think it's great for DJs but not so good for producers.
Martin: It's great for accessibility to new music. You can also take a massive amount of music to a gig. One CD wallet could easily contain the same amount of tunes a 4 record bags. But….us producers are suffering as people keep pirating digital music.
What was the first record or CD you remember buying?
Stewart: Gusto - "Disco's Revenge"Martin: MAW "To be in Love" – the original version with the full artwork on the cover.
Where do you buy your music from?
Stewart: Traxsource, Juno, DJ DownloadMartin: Traxsource, DJ Download, Beatport, Juno
Do you go to see much live music?
Stewart: I haven’t been to a live gig in ages!!Martin: I’ve been tucked away in the Studio, I haven’t been out much lately!
Within the music industry, who would you most like to meet?
Stewart: Simon Dunmore, Tony Humphries, Kerri Chandler, Dennis FerrerMartin: Brian Tappert, Pete Tong, Simon Dunmore, Louie Vega, Kenny Dope
Do you have any hobbies or interests (keep it clean please!!)
Stewart: Watching the mighty Ipswich TownMartin: I enjoy playing pool down the local
What about a favourite movie?
Stewart: Anything with Robert DeNiro in!! LEGEND!!Martin: It's got to be Scarface
Do you still go clubbing for enjoyment, if so which clubs?
Stewart: Don’t go clubbing as much anymore but still enjoy going to Ministry Of SoundMartin: All the main London clubs are still good, Ministry, The End, Turnmills etc
Given the opportunity work with anyone you liked within the music business, who would you choose
Stewart: Would have to be Simon Dunmore he has done an excellent job at Defected and has pulled one of the best ever labels Strictly Rhythm back into the limelightMartin: It would have to be Simon Dunmore and Brian Tappert. Simon for the same reasons Stewart has given and Brian for releasing quality tunes under the Soulfuric banner and of course giving us Traxsource.com
Do you have any upcoming projects you’d like to tell us about?
Stewart: Looking at our own projects we have a new track called "Nite Groove" coming out on MOD Visions in early 2009 and we've just finished off a minimal techy track that's doing the rounds with various labels as we speak
