Audiowhores

One of the success stories of 2002 was without a doubt Manchester's own Audiowhores. Adam Unsworth and Graham Lord have spent the last couple of years establishing a reputation within the industry as purveyors of the finest funky house music. Recording for Soulfuric and Look at You amongst other labels has seen their profile soar and Paul Domino took time to catch up with the guys just as they put the finishing touches to their refreshed website.

You’re based in Manchester, are you both from there originally?
G & A - Manchester, born and bread.

What do you remember of the Manchester scene from the end of the 80’s through to the early 90’s? Were you in any way influenced by it?
A – I think we are both a touch too young to remember the clubbing scene first hand in the early 90’s, although I was a regular at the Hacienda for 3 years between 1994-97. But everyone has been influenced by the music at some point

Do you remember the first record each of you bought?
A – First record I bought was a Terrance Trent Darby LP – still got it somewhere, smooth!

What led you into music production?
A – Graham was already putting tunes together when I met him. He had basic studio gear and knew how to navigate it well. I was Djing out and had really wanted to get into producing for a while. It was a god send to meet some one like minded who wanted to make house music…..we met at Out In The Sticks, the birth place to date of Copyright, Audiowhores, Essence, Redsoul (Dave Wearing) and Backroomsounds.

Which artists would you say you were particularly influenced by?
G & A - Dave Lee, MAW, Jazz n Groove, Knee Deep, Full Intention when it comes to house

Of the other DJs and producers around today, is there anyone you would single out?
G - Seamus Haji has got to be one of the most professional dj’s I’ve seen around. That guy knows how to work a crowd! Some of his productions recently are off the hook.
A – Russ from Out In The Sticks deserves a mention for the consistency of his music selection…still on it after 9 nine years as resident!

Your productions pay keen attention to the jazzier elements of music. Have either of you received professional tuition?
G - We both come from musical families and can both play to a certain extent, but most of our music comes from friends and family for the productions we do. Adams dad is a smooth jazz guitarist and keyboard player

Do you have any advice for people starting out in production?
G - These days its relatively easy to get started in production, its just taking it that further step once you get to grip with the basics. Get yourself a PC and some sort of sequencing program and get yourself familiar with Computer Music Magazine and maybe Sound On Sound.

Do you have a purpose built studio, and if so what features in it?
G - We just got a new studio in the centre of Manchester, looking forward to moving our gear into that in the coming months. At the moment we use a PC with Cubase VST, Yamaha DSP Factory, Mackie UAD-1, Korg Triton and various plugins.
A – We try to channel as much money as possible back in to studio gear……the studio is growing slowly!

How did “Word of Mouth” come about?
G - Word Of Mouth is the stuff I produce on my own when I get some spare time. It tends to cater for the more soulful/deeper side of things. At the moment I’ve only had 3 releases but we’re about to move into a new studio so hopefully things should step up a gear or two.

Through the years technology has started to allow pretty much anyone to be able to produce or make music at various levels. What are your thoughts on some of the tracks coming through right now?
G - I think it’s great for people to start out cutting up disco tracks, that’s how we all start, but these days I think there’s a few too many bootlegs and substandard cut-ups out there. If the technology is there, then I think people should try to concentrate more on original productions, that’s the only way we can move forward at the moment. How many times do you want to hear a chic loop with a house beat behind it?
A – Yeah, I agree although I don’t think the scene will ever move away from samples completely – it’s party of the history! Original production is where it’s at, but everyone is blown away by a sample track now and again – just look at JJK’s, Find A Friend last year – it’s an all time classic! I doubt Audiowhores will ever stop sampling completely – there’s another classic out there somewhere………..

What current residencies do you have?
A – No residencies as such, although we are regular guests at Angel Deelite, but mainly just guest spots around UK and Europe.

Given the opportunity, is there anyone in particular you’d like to work with?
A – I know Graham would really like to hook up with India and MAW which would be dope. On a completely different tip, I think it would be great fun to do something with a mega pop star just for the shear interest factor….maybe J-Lo?!!

How did you get together with the guys at Soulfuric?
A – We’d sent a few bits their way in the past and had some good feedback……but things really took-off when I bumped into Brian at a Soulfuric Party at El Divino in Ibiza. We’d both had a few vodkas to say the least and ended up having a really good chinwag – funny night!

What can we expect form the Audiowhores in the near future?
Forthcoming…
Audiowhores Feat. Blu – After The Party (Soulfuric Deep)
2Indigo – Sing It Shout It “Audiowhores Remix” (Peppermint Jam)
Sharna – Lifted Me “Audiowhores Remix” (Refunkt)
Spanky Wonderland – How Many Times “Audiowhores Remix” (MAP Dance)

G - We’re also working on a couple of demo’s with U.S vocalist, Rashaan Houston.
A – We’d really like to hook up with Blu again for a follow up to After The Party if we get opportunity

What are your interests outside the music scene?
A – I play football once a week and Graham watches Coronation Street if that counts?
G – ha, ha…..we have no life outside of music/clubbing and drinking I’m afraid.

Anything else you care to discuss!!!!
A – I’d quite like to talk to you about the trouble I’m having decorating the middle room at my house, but I’ve not got time!

Quickfire Round…

Favourite Pie?
G - Chicken and Mushroom
A - Meat

Favourite Drink?
G - Double vodka and red bull
A – Budweiser (or Coke!)

Shoes or Trainers?
G – Trainers
A - Trainers

In the Manchester divide, are you a Red or Blue?
G - Red
A - Red
