Grant Nelson

|
|
Grant Nelson has been on the dance music scene for some
time now and has been responsible for some fantastic
productions and remixes. He has developed his own trademark
sound throughout the years and is also behind productions
as Bump & Flex and NnG. He is one of the rare talents
around that manages to make top tunes within two different
genres of music, consistently producing the goods.
After doing this interview it seems unanimous that
Grant is all about is making good quality music.
Dave Lynam managed to catch up with
him in between studio sessions for
a quick chat about anything from movies
to McDonald’s, and a bit about music
as well!! Many thanks to Liz at Wyze
for making it possible – it’s much
appreciated and of course thanks to
Grant too for taking time to talk to
us……

Where are you now and how are you feeling?
"
At Home, between studio sessions and feeling drained
but kinda cool."
When did you start listening to
dance music?
"
Around the age of 11 probably. My
Mum's 70's Disco collection".
When did you start making music?
"
Playing music at around 14 / 15,
Recording at home aged 17. Recording
professionally age 19."
What made you decide that’s what
you wanted to do?
"
I Don't know if I ever made that
decision, it just happened really".
What is your own favourite production?
"
The Soul City Experience - Let's
Do It", A co-production with Brian
Tappert, purely for the situation
it was created in. We had just met,
I invited back to my studio and we
stayed up all night until it was
finished. It was the beginning of
a great friendship."
What would you say were your musical
influences?
"
Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, Nile
Rogers, John Carpenter, Shep Pettibone,
Eddie Perez, MAW, MK are a few."
How often do you spend in the studio?
"
My sessions can last from 8-48 hours".
How often can we see you behind
the decks?
"
This year has been a production year
for me mainly, but usually I play
every weekend".
How did you get your first gig?
Where? When? How old etc?
"
A co-worker's birthday party, I was
15, it was in a pub in Walthamstow,
it went great and I got several more
bookings out of it. I blagged the
job by telling the guy I was a DJ.
In fact I had never played out before,
only in my bedroom."
Best club ever played?
"
ECU. Rimini, Italy".
You had a set at the Soulfuric party
at WMC – what’s the connection with
the Soulfuric guys?
"
I have known both Brian Tappert & Mark
Pomeroy for a long time now, they
are both good friends, in fact Brian
was my best man at my wedding in
Las Vegas recently."

Any particular reasons why you only play US garage sets
regularly and not UK?
"
Does the World really need another
UK Garage DJ?"
Nice & Ripe – what’s the real
story?
"
I got together with this guy, we
started the label together. It was
at a time when I was just starting
out with house music production,
'93, I locked myself up in the studio,
never went clubbing, just listened
to pirates, and several years and
many records later, having no idea
how popular it or I had become I
was told that one of my records had
sold a certain amount by a distributor,
it was not the amount I had been
told by my partner. So after a bit
of digging around I discovered that
this had been the case with quite
a few other releases and dissolved
the partnership. To rub salt in the
wounds all of a sudden my production
names were appearing all over the
shop produced by different people.
It's all good though, Karma is a
great thing and i'm sure it will
come knocking in the relevant place."
NnG – What made you and Norris (Windross)
start working together?
"
We met and got on like a house on
fire, or should that be a garage
on fire."
And who is / are Bump & Flex?
"
I am the production side of the duo
and Kate Ross is my writing partner".
How does it feel to know you’re
behind some true anthems in both
the UK Garage scene and the House
scene?
"
I am proud to have played my part
and if I made a few people smile
along the way it can't be a bad thing
can it."
How do you continue to keep making
quality two-step and house tunes?
Do you find it difficult to keep
your finger on the pulse within two
genres?
"
No, not really. I just make what
I feel is good music, and to be honest,
I don't think there is much of a
pulse out there at the moment anyway.
It will pick up again soon though."
Swing City Label – How involved
are you with the day-to-day running?
How did it all begin?
What are you currently working on
(if anything) & is there anything
to look out for in the near future?
"
I have nothing to do with the day
to day running of Swing City or Wyze
Productions. I am a studio slut.
I am currently writing and producing
with an artist for Telstar called
Nicole Russo, I have just completed
the 'Ethnicity' 2 Part 12" for Swing
City and I have a bunch of other
things currently on the firm including
a couple of vocal house projects
and a funky Oldskool 4x4 UK Garage
outing."
You were in a school electro band,
which modelled themselves on the
Pet Shop Boys! Tell us a bit more
about that…….!!! (No comment is not
a valid answer!!)
"
Ok firstly, 'Electro band' makes
it sound way cooler than it was.
In actuality it was a bunch of kids
making fools of themselves but having
fun at the same time while performing
dodgy renditions of 80's electro
Pop acts like the aforementioned.
I was the keyboard player. Suffice
to say that we never played the Albert
Hall."
I read in your biog on you website
you always thought you were going
to be an actor. Would you’ve been
a big screen, Hollywood actor or
more of a soap or theatre kind of
actor??
"
At the time I would have opted for
the RADA approach, probably ending
up performing Shakespeare in some
lazy London backwater town in front
of a bunch of pensioners on the old
half price ticket flex. Given the
chance now, Hollywood baby, or maybe
some grimey low budget B movie. It
depends, I don't do naked though."

When you’re not in the studio or playing, how do you
relax?
"
At the moment I'm writing a screenplay
based on a movie idea I had a couple
of years ago, But I don't know if I
ever really relax. My brain is always
buzzing to the point where I actually
begin to annoy myself sometimes."
When was the last time you got drunk?
What were you drinking?
"
A couple of weeks ago at Mortimers
on Berners Street and it was all
thanks to my mate the White Russian."
Are you a quiet night in type of
guy or some one who’s always up for “largin’ it”?
"
I can be both. I can be the most
boring old fart or the loudest annoyance
in the house."
Where do you go to rave when you’re
not playing out?
"
I don't 'Rave' as a rule.. Not any
more. I used to be a proper hooded
topped, acid dancing, E popping,
head in the bass bin casualty. But
nowadays I'm more of a funky bar
kind of person."
Mel has asked me to find out how
the honeymoon was – where did you
go and how is married life?
"
It was in Vegas where we got married,
and lets just say it was messy. In
fact, true story, On the day of leaving
I went out on to the strip and bought
a bunch of things, one of which was
a cigarette lighter. We're talking
proper tacky tourist style thing
here. I didn't really pay much attention
to it, It did it's job and I did
mine at the roulette table. On my
last bet I had about a hundred left
and just threw it all on the number
7. Getting up ready to leave my heart
nearly stopped when it rolled in.
In fact the Pit bosses and several
staff in the area also needed some
Clooney action as the dealer started
counting out my mountain of moolah.
After giving the guys on the table,
(What was in hindsight), a well over
inflated tip we made our way to the
waiting car. I went to light a stick
to settle my still rattling nerves
when I noticed the lighter. It had
a picture of a few numbers of a roulette
table on it and a ball resting in
one of the pits.. Yep, Number 7.
So yeah, married life is a blessing."
Right – Choose one or the other!
